Getting a better deal abroad

We all work hard for our money so it is only natural to want it to work as hard for us, be it on the amount it can buy us, or the interest it earns in the bank. But making sure that it does, takes some effort and research.

Buying insurance

Taking out insurance is one of those things that is easy to forget in the frenzy of buying bikinis, sun tan oil and a good paperback. BUT DON’T.

It is hugely important to make sure you have proper insurance cover that suits your individual needs – unless of course you are very rich and can afford to fund any emergency out your own pocket. And remember, for example, the cost of treatment for a broken leg in America could be £8000 - £10000 and two days in a general hospital in the Mediterranean could be more than £600 alone, not including specialised medical treatment!

To make sure you get the best deal on your insurance you need to shop around. The internet is a great starting place and talk to brokers such as AA Travel Insurance who offer great value for money and a comprehensive policy.

Before you buy any travel insurance policy there are a few things to keep in mind:

• Enough Cover - Make sure the plan offers enough cover. A minimum £1 million medical expenses is recommended - £5 million for US trips. Also, it should cover all the activities you want to take part in.

• Medical Conditions - Tell your insurer about any pre-existing medical conditions you have or this will affect a claim relating to a condition. Not all insurers can do, but the AA provide medical screening quickly over the phone.

• Buy direct from an insurer - The policy will be cheaper and provide better cover than from a travel agent. And to ensure you have cancellation cover, always buy travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday.

• Annual Policy - If you’re planning to take more than one holiday annual travel insurance will probably give better value and takes the hassle out of buying cover each time you travel.

• Check Home Contents Cover - You may already have baggage cover while abroad so you don’t need to include this on your travel insurance. And if you don’t ski, don’t include winter sports cover.

• Read the Certificate and Policy Wording – Call your insurer if you are unsure of anything. Most insurers offer a 14 day money back guarantee, so make sure the policy suits your needs.
