Getting a better deal abroad
We all work hard for our money so it is only natural to want it to work as hard for us, be it on the amount it can buy us, or the interest it earns in the bank. But making sure that it does, takes some effort and research.

Unless you’re travelling to a remote part of the world, you will be able to take money out as you go using local cash machines, but remember this can come at a cost.
- Find a card that charges low or no fees for using it abroad
- It’s cheaper to take out cash using a debit card rather than a credit card
- Never let a retailer or restaurateur convert your bill from the local currency to sterling, as they will make extra money out of you in the conversion
- Use a credit card for purchases over £100 as card providers voluntarily give cover for purchases made abroad under the Consumer Credit Act
- Shop around to get the best exchange rate in the UK before you go
- Traveller’s cheques will give security but you may end up paying more in fees. Pre-paid cards can also be useful as some also guarantee your money back – or in a worse case scenario you only lose a finite amount if they are lost or stolen - but they are expensive to use.
